Nepal
Daily Life
Nepal is among the poorest and least developed countries in the world with almost one-third of its population living below the poverty line.
The Himalayan country has about 20% of her 27 million population still suffering from age-old socio-economic and political oppressions due to discrimination based on hierarchical Hindu caste system. The forms of these oppressions are manifold; "untouchability" is the most outrageous one, which is a grave crime against humanity.
In Nepal, Dalits are poorer than most other social groups. This because they are excluded from education and health service which condemns them to a life of absolute poverty. Especially in rural areas Dalits are even more excluded then in mayor cities. There they can change there name to find more easily housing and work as a day worker.
Although the constitution stronly forbids any kind of discrimination against Dalits in Nepal, still many people suffer from this deep-rooted cultural heritage.
And facing a tough time socially, politically and economically every day.
